In a scenario increasingly driven by environmental responsibility and the principles of the circular economy, European legislation on single-use products has accelerated the transition towards renewable, recyclable, and compostable materials.
In response to this shift, WeADD, in collaboration with The Navigator Company, has been developing moulded paper pulp solutions that combine industrial performance with sustainability, offering viable alternatives to conventional plastic-based systems across different industrial sectors.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective was to contextualise and develop innovative packaging and technical support systems that:
Replace traditional plastics with 100% home-compostable materials of FSC- certified origin;
Ensure robustness and safety in the transport and protection of fragile components;
Provide functional and sustainable packaging for the food industry;
Comply with European regulatory requirements and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of production processes.
WeADD METHODOLOGY
WeADD applied an integrated product development and engineering methodology, combining:
Market and regulatory analysis, identifying opportunities created by the new European directives on single-use products;
CAD development and functional prototyping, ensuringmechanical strength, stackability, and food safety;
Performance validation and industrialisation follow-up, guaranteeing consistent large-scale production and full compliance with sustainability criteria.
SOLUTION
This collaboration resulted in a family of sustainable moulded paper pulp products, ranging from industrial transport systems for fragile components to trays and food packaging.
Each solution was designed to ensure high mechanical stability, ease of handling, and compatibility with automated production and logistics processes, while maintaining home compostability and traceability through FSC-certified raw materials.
IMPACT
This project demonstrates how innovation in product design and engineering can drive environmental transformation.
By combining Navigator’s materials expertise with WeADD’s product development capabilities, this partnership has delivered sustainable, high-performance solutions that reduce plastic dependency and support the European transition towards circular manufacturing models.
The result is a new generation of responsible industrial products, functional, efficient, and ready for large-scale production with a positive ecological footprint.
